Topolò/Topolove

Rooted in a village at the end of the road, Associazione Topolò/Topoluove bursted like a wildflower. Given its location deep in the woods, on the mountains between Italy and Slovenia, its borderland condition was joyfully affirmed as an intrinsic part of a transnational identity. Over the years, it bloomed through the gaps of old stone walls, along throbbed forest paths and in crooked alleys surrounded by ruins and homes.

Faced with the urgency of gathering, the association grew from the desire to keep Topolò/Topolove alive – not as a picturesque postcard, but as a lived, loved, and changing place. For over two decades, it has brought together people who believe that even the smallest village can be a center of the world.

The Topolò–Topoluove Association was founded on March 16, 2000, and since 2007 it has been included in the "List of cultural organizations recognized as being of regional interest" (Regional Law 23/01/2007, No. 001, Art. 6, Paragraph 167).

From 1994 to 2022, the association’s main activity was the international project Stazione di Topolò | Postaja Topolove, which marked a process of revitalization of village life through cultural organization and promotion. The new residents of recent years have made Topolò an example of how culture can breathe new life into peripheral places.

In 2005, the Municipality of Grimacco, in collaboration with the Association, designed and created Pot umetnosti | The Path of Art along the trail from Topolò to Passo Brieza, hosting site-specific art installations. The Association also works on the valorization of the historical terraced landscape. In 2016, Topolò and Dordolla hosted the 3rd World Conference on Terraced Landscapes, organized by the University of Padua and IUAV University of Venice.

From 2021 to 2023, the Association carried out the project Živa Pot, aimed at reopening old trails and recovering ancient place names. The reopening of the paths was accompanied by live performances and concerts.

Over the years, the Association has also collaborated on cultural projects with other national and international organizations, including through European funding calls.
